Practices
We farm in the rocky clay of Orange County!
One acre is a tight space to navigate with a conventional tractor. We farm with a walk-behind BCS and use tools like the broadfork or tilther for cultivation. This means our work is mostly by hand and on a human-scale.
Although we are not certified Organic or Naturally Grown, we follow strict practices that align with both schools of thought. At this point in our growth, we don’t think it’s worth the time and cost to become certified.
We do not use pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers or harmful GMOs, thus our produce is “ecologically" grown.” We use compost and crop rotation to prioritize soil health and crop quality. These methods are also labor intensive and require a lot of sweat and love from the hands of our farm crew!
People
September Sun Produce is run by Finn Downey & Kendall King with incredible help from Dan Abel. They all love working with the land to produce food, and they all love to eat!
Kendall started September Sun Produce in 2022 after a couple of season with Bellair Farm in Scottsville, and Four Corners Farm in Rocky Mount. Kendall loves all of the problem solving necessary to make the ship float, but most of all loves managing our CSA and growing food for our lovely community.
Finn was born and raised in Charlottesville and has worked with plants & livestock his whole life. On the farm he manages restaurant sales and relationships, staffs the Orange County Farmer’s Market stand, and fixes everything. Please email septembersunproduce@gmail.com if you are interested in sourcing produce for your restaurant or event!
2025 is Dan’s second season at September Sun Produce! Dan started farming in Richmond as a volunteer with Real Roots Food Systems in 2022. Dan is starting his own market farm, Sweet Song Farm, in Crozet and will be at markets in 2026!
